The Netherlands offers research universities and universities of applied sciences, with a separate route into doctoral research. Compare the programme’s orientation, non-EU tuition and funding before applying. The NL Scholarship is partial support, while many PhD opportunities are advertised as paid positions.

Bachelor’s and master’s study are available through different institutional routes. PhDs are awarded by research universities, sometimes in collaboration with other organisations. Study in NL gives indicative annual non-EEA fees of €9,000–€20,000 for bachelor’s and €12,000–€30,000 for master’s programmes. These are planning ranges, not fixed prices. The NL Scholarship provides €5,000 in the first year for eligible non-EEA students at participating institutions. It is not a full-tuition award. Start with the institution’s instructions. Many programmes require registration in Studielink as well as further institutional steps, while some international applications follow a different route. The national portal lists 15 January for numerus-fixus programmes and 1 May as a general deadline for other programmes, with exceptions. Check accepted English or Dutch evidence, minimum scores and any waiver rules. For research, confirm the language requirements in the vacancy and with the supervisor. Do not assume that a previous English-taught degree automatically waives a language test. Study in NL: PhD routes

For the standard higher-education study permit, only an IND-recognised educational sponsor submits the application. IND specifies full-time accredited study, sufficient funds and study-progress conditions. Researchers should ask their host about the appropriate route. Compare three programmes and their total costs; confirm the full application workflow; seek written clarification of your fee status; and check scholarship coverage. For doctoral research, compare employment, grant and external-candidate arrangements, including any supervision or facility charges.
