Overview

Sweden has a central application portal for many bachelor’s and master’s programmes, while doctoral recruitment is handled by universities. International applicants should usually plan for the first admissions round. Check fee exemptions, scholarship conditions and the funding model of any PhD position separately.

How the system works

Swedish higher education includes bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral levels, with professional qualifications in some fields. English-taught master’s programmes are widely available; full English-taught bachelor’s options are more limited. Confirm that you are selecting a complete degree programme rather than individual courses. University Admissions: Swedish higher education system

Study levels

Use Universityadmissions.se for the relevant bachelor’s or master’s route. Doctoral applications go through universities. Uppsala, for example, normally recruits doctoral candidates to advertised positions and treats them as employees. Check each vacancy’s funding arrangement; this does not make every possible doctoral arrangement identical. University Admissions: Swedish higher education system Uppsala University: PhD studies

Tuition and living costs

Non-EU/EEA/Swiss applicants generally pay application and tuition fees, with exceptions. Certain Swedish residence statuses can create exemptions; a study permit alone does not. Doctoral study is exempt from these fees. Submit the evidence required for your category and obtain the programme’s actual tuition price. University Admissions: fee liability and exemptions

Scholarships and funding

University scholarships require institution-specific applications or procedures. Swedish Institute awards target specified nationalities and master’s programmes, so Belarusian eligibility must be checked in the particular call. Do not present the general scholarship directory as an award open to everyone. University Admissions: scholarships

Admissions

Read the portal’s instructions, rank your programme choices carefully, and provide academic documents and any fee or exemption evidence. A master’s programme can have additional subject requirements beyond the general degree requirement. Check the programme page before submitting your ranked application. Application periods

The first admissions round is intended for international applicants and leaves more time for residence processing. The second round has fewer English options and may be too late for applicants needing a permit. Check the calendar for your intended semester; doctoral vacancies have separate deadlines. Language requirements

Check the accepted English evidence for your application and programme. For a PhD, follow the vacancy’s language requirements. Uppsala explicitly expects good English skills; other research or teaching duties may require additional language competence. Uppsala University: PhD studies

Recognition of Belarusian qualifications

A master’s applicant needs a qualification equivalent to the relevant Swedish bachelor’s degree and must meet subject requirements. Use the portal’s document instructions for your country of education. Ask admissions about incomplete records before the supporting-document deadline. Residence and work

For students liable to tuition, paying the first instalment is part of finalising admission for residence purposes. Follow the Swedish Migration Agency route linked from University Admissions. Confirm work conditions and any doctoral-specific permit requirements with the relevant authority and host. University Admissions: residence permits

Next steps

Choose your target intake and ranked programmes; confirm document and fee deadlines; and prepare scholarship applications separately. For doctoral work, monitor university vacancies, compare funding and duties, and tailor your research experience to the advertised position.
