Overview

Austria offers university, applied-sciences and doctoral routes. Start by choosing the teaching language and institution, then ask how your previous qualification will be assessed. For Belarusian applicants, tuition exemptions, scholarship eligibility and residence requirements need separate checks before committing to a programme.

How the system works

Austria’s official study portal distinguishes universities, universities of applied sciences, private institutions and teacher education institutions. Use this distinction to compare research-oriented study with professionally focused courses. Check the institution and exact qualification in the official listings. OeAD: Study in Austria

Study levels

Bachelor’s applicants need an appropriate school qualification; master’s applicants need a relevant first degree. Doctoral applicants should identify a suitable university and research area. Search Austrian research vacancies through EURAXESS: jobs, funding and hosting opportunities; ask whether the advertised position includes doctoral admission or requires a separate application. OeAD: application and admission

Tuition and living costs

Fees depend on institution type and your legal status. Public-university rules distinguish student categories and allow some exemptions; universities of applied sciences and private institutions have their own arrangements. Request the current semester fee, student-union contribution and exemption evidence in writing. Budget separately for housing, insurance and translations. OeAD: tuition fees

Scholarships and funding

Search grants.at by country of origin, destination, subject and study level. Treat it as a directory: a listing does not establish that applications are currently open or that it funds an entire degree. Compare the award duration and eligible costs with your study plan. grants.at: Austrian funding database

Admissions

Apply to the chosen institution. OeAD provides guidance but does not process university admission. Check entrance examinations, portfolio or interview requirements and the institution’s document submission method before ordering certified copies. OeAD: application and admission

Application periods

Use the programme’s deadline for your intended intake. Selection procedures can close well before ordinary enrolment. Build a timeline that includes examinations, document assessment, scholarship decisions and residence processing; do not treat a general semester deadline as your personal application deadline. OeAD: application and admission

Language requirements

Most programmes use German, with English-taught options also available. Read the programme’s accepted language evidence and any preparatory-course conditions. Ask whether you must meet the language requirement when applying or before final enrolment. OeAD: application and admission

Recognition of Belarusian qualifications

Ask admissions which translations and legalisation are required for your Belarusian qualification. If records are missing, explain what you can provide before paying for assessment. Academic recognition is not automatically uniform across the EU. Your Europe: recognition of academic diplomas

Residence and work

OeAD’s work guidance directs students to its entry and residence information. Work conditions depend on nationality and residence title. Ask the institution’s international office which student or researcher route fits your situation and whether the proposed work needs additional authorisation. OeAD: working in Austria

Next steps

Shortlist three programmes; request the exact fee and language conditions; identify a funding route; then send admissions a concise document checklist. For a PhD, also ask the supervisor or hiring department about salary or scholarship duration, research costs and the appointment’s immigration route.
