Write a research proposal

A proposal explains what you want to investigate, why it matters and how the work can be done. Follow the call’s structure before using a generic template.

Start with a bounded question

Define the problem and a research question you could realistically address within the time available. Explain what existing work establishes and what remains unresolved. Cite the sources you actually used; a longer bibliography is not a substitute for a clear question.

Connect methods to the question

Describe the material, data or cases you need and how you would analyse them. Explain access, feasibility and foreseeable obstacles. If a method is new to you, describe the training or collaboration needed rather than pretending to have expertise.

Show a workable plan

Divide the work into stages with outputs. Include an alternative if data access fails or recruitment is slower than expected. Consider ethics, consent and data handling where relevant. Explain why the proposed host has the expertise or facilities the work needs.

Check whether a proposal is required

Some structured science programmes instead ask about interests or preferred groups. Follow the actual application instructions. Use the supplied planning template to organise your thinking, then rewrite it to match the provider’s headings, length and authorship rules.
