Separate jobs with an existing budget from fellowships that require you to develop a proposal with a host.

Search by work, not only title

Use your methods, field and career stage as search terms. Relevant roles may be labelled postdoctoral researcher, research associate, project researcher or research fellow. Read the responsibilities and required degree instead of relying on the title alone.

Verify the actual vacancy

Move from a portal listing to the institution’s announcement. Check the deadline, project dates, location, contract duration, workload and application documents. Save the vacancy text privately, because it may disappear after recruitment closes.

Assess the research environment

Read the group’s work and consider mentoring, publication opportunities, facilities and expected teaching. If the contract is shorter than the project, ask what determines extension. For a fellowship, establish whether the host supports the application and has an internal deadline.

Tailor the evidence

Choose publications, methods and examples that show you can do the advertised work. Explain your contribution to joint outputs. Track applications and responses in a private file. A positive conversation is useful progress, but only the written offer establishes the proposed conditions.
