Find and contact a potential supervisor

Look for a research match before sending an email. A professor’s interest can help you explore a project, but it does not by itself establish admission or funding.

Check whether contact is expected

Some doctoral calls recruit into a defined project and require an application through a portal. Others expect you to develop a proposal with a supervisor. Follow that route first; an unsolicited email should not replace a formal application.

Build a small, relevant list

Read a group’s current research and recent outputs. Identify a question, method or dataset that connects to your experience. Check whether the group is recruiting and whether the named academic supervises applicants at your level.

Send a focused enquiry

Introduce your academic background, explain the research connection in a few sentences and ask whether they expect to supervise or host work in that area. Attach a concise academic CV if appropriate and refer to the advertised position where one exists. Use an original message tailored to the group.

Clarify the next step

If the response is positive, ask about the admissions route, funding, timing and what to prepare for a discussion. Do not interpret “interesting project” as a funded offer. Record any commitments precisely and keep looking until a formal pathway is clear.
