Contact a university with a useful question

A short, specific question is easier for an admissions team to answer than a general request to explain everything about studying abroad.

A short, specific question is easier for an admissions team to answer than a general request to explain everything about studying abroad.

Identify the right office

Use the programme page to find admissions or the international office. Funding questions may belong to a separate scholarship team. Check the published guidance first so your message can focus on what remains unclear.

Include only relevant context

Name the programme and intake. State the qualification you hold or expect, its awarding country and the question you need answered. If asking about a missing document, describe what you can provide and ask whether it is acceptable.

Suggested structure: “I am considering [programme, intake]. I hold [qualification, country]. Your page asks for [requirement]. Could you confirm [one specific question]?” This is an enquiry structure, not an application statement.

Make the answer actionable

Ask about a concrete requirement, route or deadline. Avoid asking the university to predict admission before it sees an application. Do not attach a passport or unrelated records to an initial enquiry.

Save the reply with your application notes. If you follow up, use the same thread, quote the application reference if you have one and allow for the office’s stated response time.

Your checklist

  • Correct office selected
  • Programme and intake named
  • One clear question asked
  • Reply saved with application notes
