Choose a university and build a realistic shortlist

Start with the outcome you need: a first degree, a specialist qualification, a research career or a change of profession. A university is useful to you when its programme, entry requirements and costs fit that outcome.

Compare programmes, not just university names

Create a shortlist of three to six programmes. For each one, read the curriculum, teaching language, entry requirements, assessment methods and final qualification. Note which requirements you already meet and which need work. A prestigious institution is not automatically the best fit for your subject or circumstances.

Separate essentials from preferences

Essentials might include an accepted previous qualification, a teaching language you can use confidently and a credible funding plan. Preferences might include city size, optional modules or a particular supervisor. Remove options that fail an essential condition unless the university confirms a workable alternative.

Check the practical route

Find the actual programme page from an official national portal. Check recognition of the institution and ask the admissions office about your particular qualification if the answer is unclear. Record the application route and any separate scholarship process. Before paying, establish the total first-year cost and the refund conditions.
